Celosia Cut Flower Care
EDG celosia are shipped from our coolers in water treated with chlorine tablets in order to keep the water fresh and bacteria free. Bacteria would otherwise clog the stems and cause wilting and is enemy #1 in vase length. Remember the 3 C’s Clean Cool Chlorine when placing your celosia in water.
Wholesalers
1. When you receive your celosia place them directly in your cooler from your cooled truck if possible.
2. When processing orders avoid bringing the flowers repeatedly in and out of the cooler as this encourages moisture in the sleeves which in turn could provide an opportunity for botrytis to grow.
3. Always ship in water treated with chlorine tablets (Florissant 500/ or chrysal cvb).
4. If flowers remain in your cooler for more than 3 days replace your water and pails with fresh clean cool chlorine treated water. (room temp water used in pails that will later be placed in your cooler will cause condensation in the sleeves).
5. If flowers are to be stored more than a few days give them more space by placing fewer bunches in a pail.
Flower Shops/Florists
Once flowers arrive at your location cut the stems and place them in cool clean chlorine treated water (Florissant 500/ or chrysal cvb). You may display your celosia at room temp and they will last a long time as long as you remove the sleeves, most of the leaves, give them space and replace the water following the 3 C’s. every 3 days.
You may also place them in your cooler in which case avoid often moving them in and out of the cooler as this leads to condensation which in turn may lead to Botrytis. (this is what causes flowers to rot). If floral foam is used to display celosia than remove most if not all leaves and cut stems short as celosia are heavy drinkers and risk wilting.
Two types of Fungi to look out for is Blue mold which is what you might find on old bread and only effects the esthetics and Botrytis which is what causes the rooting and can be very damaging to cut flowers. Botrytis spores are everywhere in the environment the key is to prevent the conditions that allow the growth ie condensation.
